Welcome Brett Davis: Associate Consultant, Cyber Risk Advisory

Meet Brett Davis, BARR Advisory’s newest Associate Consultant in our Cyber Risk Advisory practice. In his role, Brett works with clients on cybersecurity strategy and program design to improve their preparedness for risk threats. Prior to BARR, Brett served in the United States Navy for six years before earning his accounting degree from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. We look forward to sharing this brief Q&A, so you can get to know our new BARR team member.

Tell us a little about your background.

Before joining the BARR team, I was enlisted in the United States Navy, where I was involved in special operations. Everything I did required secure, encrypted communication lines.

After serving for six years, I decided to go back to school for my accounting degree. As someone who grew up with the quick evolution of technology and the desire to make a difference, I was drawn to work in a fast-paced environment with a focus on technology and security.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my degree. I joined the Navy 10 years ago with the goal of using it to pursue an education. I am pleased I had the foresight and determination to make that happen. The journey was long, but the people I met along the way and the places I have been, made everything worthwhile.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“If it was easy, everyone would do it.”

What is your favorite outdoor activity?

Wakeboarding. To me, nothing feels better than waking up as the sun rises to go out and carve water that looks smooth as glass.

What do you love most about your job in cybersecurity?

I love that every company BARR works with is different — with unique goals and capabilities. Helping these companies with cybersecurity, gives me the peace of mind that we are strengthening and growing their business through security and compliance.

What is your advice for someone starting a career in the cybersecurity industry?

While cybersecurity is a very rewarding industry, be prepared to be uncomfortable as the landscape and regulations are constantly changing and present new challenges daily.

Why is what BARR does so paramount for every organization?

Most headlines cover large companies getting compromised by hackers, but what many people don’t realize is the vulnerabilities of smaller businesses that are exploited every day. It is imperative that every organization, large or small, take steps to detect and prevent these invasions.
