Welcome Whitney Perez: Senior Consultant, Cyber Risk Advisory

June 25, 2019 |

Meet Whitney Perez, BARR Advisory’s new Senior Consultant in our Cyber Risk Advisory practice. In her role, Whitney assesses privacy programs and develops sustainable processes to enhance operational performance. She takes great pride in assisting key stakeholders across all organizations in solving complex business challenges.

Whitney started her career at Grant Thornton in Dallas, Texas in the Business Advisory practice. She is a graduate of the University of Kansas and is a Certified Information Security Auditor (CISA). We look forward to sharing this brief Q&A, so you can get to know our new team member.

What do you love most about your job in cybersecurity?

I love making meaningful contributions in the cybersecurity space. BARR has the resources to help educate companies in security and compliance best practice, develop security and compliance programs, and assist in evaluating a company’s security program already in place. Security and compliance is key to every organization, and being able to provide peace of mind to our clients — that their data is secure — is not a task I take lightly.

What advice do you have for smaller companies that don’t have big budgets for cybersecurity risk management and compliance services?

Joining professional organizations, such as ISACA, can be a good place to start to learn about security and compliance best practices. There is an abundance of information written by, and for, security professionals and those seeking to develop a robust, secure environment within their organization.

What inspires you in your career and personally?

My husband and son inspire me to do better every day. I want to be the best I can be, both professionally and personally, for them. Showing our son what hard work and dedication leads to is important to us.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

In January 2016, I finished my first marathon. Even though my body was breaking down, I never stopped running and was able to cross the finish line. It wasn’t about getting the best time; it was about completing a goal I set for myself.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Try to see things from another person’s perspective. Conflicts can arise from a simple misunderstanding, and communication is key.

What is the most important attribute you bring to your job?

I listen and adapt to my clients’ needs. I partner with them to provide effective, efficient and meaningful solutions, so they’re able to develop and maintain secure environments within their organization.

What’s one thing you wish organizations seeking security and compliance services knew when looking for an audit firm?

Big name audit firms don’t always mean you will get the best results. Look for a firm that will go that extra mile and work with you to provide the best service possible to meet your security and compliance needs.

Why should clients choose BARR? Why did you choose BARR?

BARR employs the talent that you get at a “Big 4” firm, but is able to provide a more personal experience. Our clients aren’t just numbers, and likewise, I’m not just another warm body in the office. I’m a valued associate, my opinions matter, and that empowerment lets me excel professionally and provide the best client service possible.
