January 29, 2020 | Privacy

Today, January 28, is officially 2020 Data Privacy Day, and the BARR Advisory team is proud to be recognized as a Data Privacy Day Champion.

Champions represent organizations and individuals who are dedicated to empowering others to respect privacy, safeguard data, and enable trust.

“Data Privacy Day is something we celebrate every day here at BARR,” said Brad Thies, founder and president. “Data is the new oil and BARR empowers companies and consumers alike to ensure it is used safely. We hope by joining this important conversation, more people will discuss and take action on data privacy.”

What’s an easy way to protect your data? Update your privacy settings. Here are three common online sites – select one, two, or all three to get privacy settings updated.

  • Amazon: Click to check your email settings, update your password, set up multi-factor authentication and more.
  • Spotify: Click to learn how your personal data is collected, how it is protected, how you can access or download a copy of your data, and more.
  • Instagram: Click to find out how to control your visibility, tips for parents, how to block accounts, comments and more.

If you use another website, social media site or app frequently, we recommend searching for its data privacy or privacy settings webpage and updating or reviewing your settings.

Data Privacy Day is an effort led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) that began in 2008. According to the NCSA, the day “commemorates the January 28, 1981, signing of the Convention 108 — the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection.”
